What Are the Different Versions of PHP Programming Language?

May 21, 2022     Are, Different, Language?, php, programming, the, Versions, What     No comments

PHP3

PHP3 was the first version of PHP and was released in 1998. In this version, the language focused on web development and it was developed by Rasmus Lerdorf. This version did not have object-oriented programming features but instead was an interpreted language. It also supported HTML embedded in PHP code which allowed you to mix content from both languages together as shown below:

PHP4

If you're new to web development, PHP4 is the most popular version of PHP and probably the best choice for getting started as a beginner. It was released in 1998 and has been widely used by developers ever since. However, its popularity is slowly declining because it's deprecated in favor of newer versions such as PHP5 (released in 2004).

PHP4 still continues to be used by many websites even though it's not secure or compatible with modern web standards. It can also cause problems if you're working with any other language that uses UTF-8 encoding, such as HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript.

PHP5

PHP5 was released in 2004, and is currently the most popular version of PHP. It's also the most stable version of PHP available today, which means you won't have to worry about a lot of changes coming down the road. That's good news for coders who don't want their code to break every time a new update comes out.

PHP5 has many security features that help protect your websites:

  • Login pages are required to have HTTPS encryption (this secures your passwords)

  • Cookies cannot be read by other websites (this prevents third-party tracking)

PHP6

  • PHP6 was the last version of PHP that was under development. It was intended to be the next major version of the language, with backwards compatibility with PHP5.

  • But after years of development, it's now clear that PHP6 will never be released. The developers decided to rename it as “PHP Next Generation” or “PHPNG” and keep working on it for future versions.

PHP7

PHP7 is the latest version of PHP programming language. It was released in 2015 and became a stable version in December 2016. PHP7 is faster than previous versions, has better memory management, and supports the latest features of object-oriented programming.

PHP7 has many new features such as:

  • A new syntax that makes it easier to write code in a more modern way

  • A completely redesigned engine (Zend Engine 3) with an improved performance at runtime and execution time for PHP scripts on your website or web application. The improved performance makes it possible to run applications faster than before with less CPU usage!
