The world’s largest encyclopedia, Wikipedia, uses a custom-built wiki platform called MediaWiki. The software that powers this platform is written in the programming language PHP.

MediaWiki was created by Magnus Manske in 2000 and first used on Wikipedia in 2001. It was released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) until June 2004 when it switched to a dual license with the GPL version 2 or later and the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike License.
