PHP is most similar to Perl, which means that it's an interpreted language. What does "interpreted" mean? It's basically just a fancy way of saying that PHP doesn't need to be compiled into machine-readable code before running - instead, commands are run directly by your web browser once they're uploaded onto your server via FTP (or other method). The benefit here is speed; since there isn't any compiling required, websites load up much faster than they would otherwise.

C

Perl
Perl is a high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language. It was originally developed for text processing and now used for a broad range of tasks including system administration, web development, network programming and GUI development. Perl was designed with the philosophy that "there's more than one way to do it", which means there are often many ways to accomplish the same task in Perl.
The original version of Perl was developed by Larry Wall in 1987 as an extension of his earlier shell script named "patch". The name stands for Practical Extraction and Report Language because it only allowed extracting information from files without modifying them or generating reports based on them. In 1989 a new version of Perl with powerful string processing capabilities called "Perl 2" was released but never achieved widespread popularity because some core developers didn't like its direction so they decided not to support it by releasing new versions until 1995 when Larry Wall took over control again with his new vision for the language (which still exists today).
Java
Java is a compiled language with a C-like syntax. It has a different set of reserved words than PHP, and its types are slightly different. The operators also look slightly different, but they're pretty similar in functionality.
Java's implementation of classes is also very different from how PHP handles them; Java allows you to define both instance variables (statics) and methods within each class, whereas PHP only allows you to define methods within classes unless they're declared as static.
Python
If you're familiar with any of these languages, you'll find that PHP is most similar to Perl. It borrows its syntax from other languages—including C, Java and Python—and offers many of the same constructs and features.
Most notably, it has a general-purpose scripting language that uses interchangeable code snippets called "scripts".
Fortran
Fortran (formula translation) was invented in 1954 by John Backus at IBM. Backus preferred the name "Formula Translating System," but was overruled by his boss, who thought the name would be too cumbersome to market. Fortran remains one of the most popular programming languages in use today, and has been influential in shaping many other languages like C and C++.
